Sony explains next gens PSN charge

PSN

So next gen we’re going to have to pay to play online, the waters have stilled since the public feigned anger over Sony’s decision at e3. Was anybody actually pissed at this decision? I’ve read so many bitchy, whiny comments online “I’ve spent £60 to play online this year” and “How dare they begin to charge!” Like they have any idea what it costs to keep a service like Xbox Live or PSN running.

I certainly don’t know how much it costs and anybody who does is simply speculating, but I trust them enough to pay whatever they ask for. I’ll wait for the ads before I start getting pissed about where my money’s going like in the case Xbox Live, surely then we’ll have a case to be pissed about them charging. There’s no doubt that Xbox Live is a much more stable service than PSN because of their charge, an online cost doesn’t have to be such a bad thing so long as they don’t treat their customers like Microsoft do.

An article in Famitsu has been translated by Kokatu:

“The main pillar for the PS4 will be online play. We’re developing many new ways to play and connect which requires a large investment of resources.” Yoshida explained. “Considering the cost, to try to keep such a service free and consequently lower the quality would be absurd. We decided that if that’s the case, then it would be better to receive proper payment and continue to offer a good service.”
